October and November 2009 Classes

Finally! The new schedule is here. Sheesh!(picture lots of grins and some lovely sarcasm on my end.)

A TASTE OF KNITTING

Come see what all the knitting excitement is about! This is a two-part class in which you will learn to cast on, knit, purl and bind off. If you have taken the class before and feel that you need a refresher, come on and join us again.
Date: Tuesdays, October 13, 20
Time: 6:00pm-8:00pm
Fee: $44.00 plus materials
Instructor: Mark Guardado

CALORIMETRY

"Calorimetry is a scientific term describing the measurement of heat lost or gained.
Knit hats are a wonderful way to block out the cold, but when you have long hair it usually requires wearing it down, not often the most comfortable option on a blustery day. This headscarf allows you to wear your hair up while keeping your ears warm and preventing heat from escaping from the top of your head." Quoted from the designer, Kathryn Schoendorf.
Date: Tuesday, October 15
Time: 6:00pm-8:00pm
Fee: $22.00 plus materials
Instructor: Meg Smith

MEDITATIVE KNIT OR CROCHET

Knitting is a really fine way to clear one’s mind. This workshop will be about filling your project with peaceful thoughts. There will be a minimum of talking and a maximum of peacefulness. A prayer shawl is a good choice of project but any project is okay. If you want to donate a shawl it will be gratefully accepted. We are in the process of finding a group to donate to.
Date: Friday, October 16
Time: 6:00pm - 7:00pm
Fee: $11.00 plus materials
Instructor: Sara Peters

FABERGE NECK WARMER

This is a beautiful, beaded neck warmer and will make a stunning holiday gift. Looks like you took days when we all know it took only a mere handful of hours. Worsted weight yarn and size 5 beads are needed along with a crochet hook, size 9. We will have the beads in stock for you, as it seems most bead stores don’t carry the size 5 beads.

Instructor: Meg Smith

WATERFALL SCARF

Jane Davis has designed another stunning scarf with worsted weight yarn and beads. Big surprise, more beads! I already have the yarn and beads in stock so you can do some one stop shopping. This is one of the simpler ways to knit with beads; if you know how to knit and purl you can make this. The beads will need to be strung before class so please come in early to pick your supplies. The pattern has detailed directions for grafting the two sides together and you can always come in when you finish both sides for some hands on help.

Time: 9:00am - 11:00am
Fee: $22.00 plus materials

SQUARE CAKE PURSE
From knitty.com, "This pattern was inspired by the yarn I used to make it – my favorite place to find inspiration.
The bag has diamond stitch panels running vertically up the body of the bag.
The handles act as both handle and closure making it easy to knit and use. Simply twist one handle, then pass the other handle through the hole, and you’re good to go!"
We will be using yarn from Tilli Thomas. Luscious silk with either beads or sequins strung onto the yarn. Sign up early so we can order the special color of your dreams.
Date: Thursdays, November 12, 19

ODESSA HAT
More fun with beads! Meg just can't stay away from them. Odessa is a lovely hat that has beads spiraling around it. You may make it with our without beads depending on the gender of the person you are knitting for. If you use beads you will need to purchase approximately 150 size 6 beads. There is some homework for this hat. Students will need to string the beads and knit the beginning ribbing before class so that we may concentrate on the main body of the hat.

NORWEGIAN STAR EAR FLAP HAT

This is a great way to learn the fair isle technique and have a great hat when you are done. The hat has wonderful earflaps, stars around the middle and those cute little ties to hold it on. It also comes sized for children and adults. You will need two colors of worsted weight yarn and size 7 circular needles or whatever will get the gauge.

CROCHET FOR KNITTERS

Do you know the basics of crochet and are just afraid to use it on garments? Meg can help. Even if you don’t know how she can show you. You will learn how to add a simple single crochet edge and the infamous crab stitch. If you would like a fancier stitch, we can do that too. Lose your fear and come play with crochet.
